Northern Idaho
The two main cats D6C and D4D we use are both SA, so they have a direct drive transmission instead of the power shift found on dozers. They are 1973 and 1974 models and can work at 5-5.5mph. The older cat is a 1960 D6B with 4 working gears and a road gear, the older cats were limited to 4mph.

In areas with sandy soil undercarriage work may be needed every several thousand hours as rollers wear out fast in sand compared to our clay.

There are still a fair amount steel tracked cats running in my area probably because most farmers here run older equipment and we let the guys up in the palouse buy the new stuff. I know in the drier areas in Washington that summerfallow and have steep hills, steel tracks are still preferred and common because the rubber tracked machines wont hold the soft hills as well.

Moving down the road is a problem for some but we get by because most roads are gravel and we can go cross country to by-pass the paved roads.
