Since your original post, I have a hard time imagining "wet on either side that you can't get in". Can you clarify your situation as to why you can't get a lime spreader in the field at some point in the year?

A thought:  have you thought about putting wheat or barley - or even oats - into your rotation?  this would give you an open timeslot in the middle of summer when it might be drier to access the field with a lime spreader. Maybe there are other issues that I am not understanding.

I work with Berks shale, and am very familiar with that soil type. Overall, it's not a bad soil - a bit droughty, but you learn to manage around that.

What county are you located in?

(I am located in Franklin Co. PA.)
