WC IL
I have an'04 F350 with the 6.0 and an'08 with the 6.4. The only problems I have had with the 6.0 are a leaking gasket in the EGR valve cooler and it is currently in the shop with a leak in a connector on the high pressure oil pump that caused a starting problem. The truck has 134,000 miles, about half of which it has pulled a 24' livestock trailer or 30' flat trailer, grossing 25-30,000 lbs. Overall, I have been pleased with it.
My '08 has 54,000 miles and I have had zero problems with it. The mileage is not as good as the 6.0, about 1.5 miles less per gallon, but it will outpull the 6.0 with ease. Mileage pulling trailers is about the same, from 10.5-12.5, depending on load and wind. On a long run, if I behave speed wise, I can get close to 20 mpg running empty. Running around, I get from 14-17 mpg. This is with automatic, 18" tires, and 3.73 gears, extended cab, long bed. Empty weight on truck full of fuel, me in the seat, is right at 8200 lbs.
I had a '99 7.3 before I bought these trucks and can honestly say I had more problems with it than I have had with either the 6.0 or 6.4. I have friends that have problems with both the Duramax and the Cummins trucks. It comes down to, some are good from the start and some are crap from the start. If you're unlucky enough to get a bad one, get rid of it as quickly as you can and try something different. Personally,I'm waiting to see how good the new 6.7 Ford motor is. I try to trade one truck every four years, so it should be out for a couple of years by the time I'm ready to trade next time.
