| Economical? No. The poor efficiency of a small residential generator would be worse than just driving a ICE powered car to begin with. It could work in a pinch, but the generator isn't going to keep up with what the car requires. Not to mention I don't believe many EVs let you charge and drive at the same time (party poopers!).
Hybrid cars have transmissions that can split power sources from the engine and/or motor(s). So under cruise conditions where the engine is doing all the work your efficiency loss is just mechanical losses in the transmission. Versus if it were a generator there would be losses between the generator/controllers/motor(s) that would be more than what the mechanical losses would be. | |
