Abviously you have never washed a pair of really oily, dirty coveralls in the house washing machine. Nothing comes clean for weeks afterwards, unless you run 20 gallons of gasoline through it after the coveralls. The wife really has something to bitch about.
I always pre wash dirty, oily stuff in a 5 gallon bucket with Dawn dish soap and a couple of good rinses before throwing in the washing machine. Easy way to keep the peace. Comes out cleaner too.
