Derek, have you considered using boater technology for collecting GPS referenced tractor fuel flow and other sensor data? I think the boaters have got data collection down to a VERY low cost science. They use the NMEA-2000 bus and have all kinds of sensor stuff to plug into that low cost bus. It's low cost but should be reliable, I think boaters are more demanding on that score than farmers seem to be. Here is link to Lowrance use of NMEA-2000 bus for boat engine and fish finding stuff.

I haven't tried using NMEA-2000 bus stuff for Precision Ag data collection yet, it's my on to-do list.
