Subject: RE: Big square baler knotter HELP!!!!

Hi There,
I am new to forums so not sure if replying to your post is the right thing to do or if I should create a new post? Anyway I am a farmer in Tasmania, Australia and am having knotter problems with a Hesston baler too. Mine is badged as Massey Ferguson (MF) 185 Series 2. Its a 3x3 Square Baler with double knotters that I am having ongoing trouble with. The last couple of seasons the outside knots on 1 and 4 have been weak (let go on the second knot (one that starts the bale) when the bale hits the ground) or drops this second knot (1 in ~ 40 bales) when bailing barley straw or very dry and springy grass hay. The knots have held ok when bailing Lucerne or Clover or Greener hay with occasional miss ties. I have managed to work around this by bailing with less pressure in the chamber but have had lighter than ideal bales because of it. I have changed to a new thicker twine this season, with greater knotting strength (to try and overcome the problem), but I and am now having more trouble than ever before. I have gone through the manual of the baler and adjusted as much of the knotter systems as I understand to within specs. I have the twine tension set to 70N on the upper Twine tensioner and 80N on the Lower Twine (Increased from 70N as recommended by the manual as I was getting a short tail on the second knot). I have replaced twine rollers and ensured that twine routing is correct and not restricted anywhere.
I have installed new twine knives and checked the twine finger adjustment. The stripper arm is gently rubbing on the bottom of the billhook. I have taken some ultra slow-motion video footage of Knotter 4 of the baler tieing when the baler is operating at 350 PTO RPM so you can see what is happening. I am unsure how to attach this footage to the post as it appears I can only attach files under 2MB. I could email or text this video to anyone who is interested in helping. The first knot (finishing the bale) appears to be tieing perfectly and swept off the billhook but the second knot (starting the new bale) is constantly sub standard and ugly and regularly hangs on / hasn't fully being tied by the billhook . Both inside knotters 2 and 3 are tieing both first and second knots nicely with no issues. There are very few square balers is use in Tasmania as round bales are the norm and I haven't been able to find anyone who can shed any more light on my problems. I would appreciate any help or advice than can be offered. We are currently in the middle of harvest but have been rained out so have some time on my hands to try and rectify the problem (s).
Thanks in advance
Kind Regards
David
