Melancthon, Ontario | Biggest issue I have with them is that the no one involved gives a damn about the land or the guy farming it. Few times we'd show up at a farm to find they peeled topsoil for the access road, tied it into the entrance we use, leave all the dirt pushed up in a 6' berm around the road with nowhere to get into the field. After the towers are up they never did any clean up work at all, LOTS of stones to be picked and ruts to be leveled all around where they've been. Also lost a few acres around the base of towers, healthy crop, destroyed mid season so they could look for dead birds. Also when they survey for the tower they tramp around in your crop and drive stakes wherever they like, then send the plow in to look for arrow heads whenever they feel like.
When you try to address these issues you just get the run around; well heres the number for the guy in charge of that area. Call him, we hired a company to do that, here's their number. Call that, well we subbed that out to this guy. Call him, I was just hired to do X and Y not Z, why are you bothering me with this? So start working back up the chain the other way, buck just keeps getting passed and at the end of the day, no one gives a damn about what they've cost you.
Also hate how they lay them out and where they put some of the access roads; but once you sign up they do what they want and there's not a thing you can do about it then.
As far as opposing it, good luck, lots of short sighted folks are eager for "free" money. Here you could almost peg which farms would get wind towers just by the attitude/management style of the landowner.
Having said all that, at the end of it all, the towers are putting money in peoples pockets for now. Hear LOTS of chatter about them being late paying, but thats mostly rumors, cant say how much truth is in it.
