The best feeders I ever saw put the bale about 5 feet above the ground. Something about cattle; they always clean up what's on the ground before they reach up to get more.
I first noticed this myself when we had some hay bales on a wagon, the cattle fed from it and there wasn't a bit of wasted hay on the ground.
