Agree with quality of hay being fed, but also how hungry you keep your cattle. Every rancher has different ideas on how much to feed. Some will keep feeders full at all times = greater waste vs. some will keep their cows hungry/thin and they will clean up better.

Another factor is every ranchers "definition" of waste is different, many think nothing of having to move feeder 3 time a week to keep feeder from getting buried.

Reality is that all hay rings/feeders have waste. Only way to reduce waste is to feed with mixer into bunks and even then if you don't keep cattle slightly hungry there will be waste.

All has to be balanced out with if you are loosing enough feed to justify extra cost of equipment and labor.
