Stoddard Co. SEMO
What number of button is in it now? If it original, it’s probably an 18-21. I’d put a #12 button in it and try that first. Check the fuel screw on the side of the pump and see if the ball has been removed from the head. If not, and still not quite suited with the performance of the #12 button, give that screw a 1/4 turn clockwise.
The screw allows more fuel and more fuel doesn’t always = more hp but it’s part of the equation. The button allows for more or less pressure. More pressure (smaller the number of button) = more atomized fuel. More atomized fuel = more efficient burn. So, you maybe getting enough fuel as it stands(lots of black smoke) and just a #12 button will suit you.
Pay very close attention to your ET’s, especially when pulling a grade at lower rpms. Alot of old big and small cams got melted down, when drivers would put them in the “big hole“ and try to run with guys that weren’t loaded, loaded as heavy, or ran KTA’s or 3408’s back in the day. Even with a head wind over time your engine can get hot. Watch RPMs and watch Pyrometer. They go hand in hand.
