The guys and I are all volunteers here. How much time and effort would you want to expend trying to catch these things, when the vast majority of users are legit?

OTOH, in any given week, I'd say anywhere from 10% to 30% of new registrations are known spammers and others who want to exploit the site. Better to spend time scrutinizing them, and then focusing on users with bad habits.
