Kingdom of Callaway - Fulton, Mo 65251 | kfarm_EC_IL - 11/25/2021 17:57 First year using triticale cover over winter then wet baling for cattle feed. Love the feed. Not loving trying to get it fed. I’m doing something incorrectly because I end up losing 25% to (75% tonight) before getting bale in feeder. We have tried the spear and gripper both and generally either make a mess. Maybe needs to be in a feed wagon or something. Have fed round bales for years so maybe just a mental block. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
I don't have a photo handy, but I took a single bale spear, and removed the two short spears on the bottom and replaced them with normal long spears, the same length as the top one. So now there are three identical spears on it. When picking up a silage bale, I put the bottom two spears just an inch above the bottom edge of the net wrap/plastic. Then when you pick it up, you are supporting the very bottom of the bale, plus your top spear is right in the center of the core. Even on bales from a chopper baler, that is usually enough support to hold it all together after cutting off the wrap. You might lose a few pounds, but it is enough to raise it up and drop it into a TMR without making a mess.
For bale rings, as someone else said, I just spear it, hold it above the ring, make a razor blade slit on one side, and pull it off the other. Then drop in ring. |
