No, there are many reasons to own an AR15 (please do not call it an assault gun it was not fully automatic). In this particular case it was to show the RIOTERS (not protesters) that he had a big scary gun and don't F*#@ with him. The criminals who got shot were not smart enough to get the message and the rest is history.
I wish that we could own this hardware in Canada, but out society has become such Nervous Nelly's that to own this gun (which if functionally indistinguishable from quite a few hunting rifles) that is not an option.
