When we had an ice storm two years ago, I burned 40 or 50 piles. It was stuff from very fine up to about 6 or 8 inches. It would always burn well. It was fresh off the tree. As a previous poster said "if it is hot enough, it will burn". I found that used motor oil is better fire starter that diesel fuel. It keeps on burning longer. If you have some old skids, a tire, or something to generate heat initially, it helps.
