Glen W.-Has that 480 hours been all on wheat? If so I’m struggling to understand why volcanic soil wears the combine when presumably no dirt goes through the combine. Does the straw carry abrasive dust in? Is the grain especially hard or abrasive?
I think in the plains a wheat machine is expected to wear less than a corn/soybean machine. Maybe I’m wrong about that?
We are 2/3 wheat and 1/3 peas or chickpeas with barley thrown in the mix. The hot and dry conditions and yes wind sets a lot of dust on the wheat.
The pictures are all this year and it was a drought year so yields were one of the lowest in years. These are mid to upper rainfall areas here in the pictures. Higher yields take their toll on the combine when getting over 120 bpa. That is the bright side of this year annual overhaul cost is going to be down. We have started on the first combine and wear is down from the last several years.
Here are pictures of our dust in lower than normal yields.
