Very subjective way of ding it, we know what he is getting at. But, just saying doubling the first number is fecetious. What then for a $175 meal. Just double the ONE, heh.

Some say to just double the tax rate on your bill if one is bad at math (this includes my wife and she is an accountant) State and local taxes in many areas are close to 8 or 10% combined, and doubling the tax should come up with close to the 15 to 20% number most strive for. However, if one consumes very many adult beverages and goes by the "double the tax" philosophy, the waiter gets shorted a bit. Liquor taxes are included in the drink, and the price of the drinks are not used in the calculation of total taxes for the meal.

Eating out is so complicated isn't it.

A disclaimer for my wife. I do give her a hard time about math and accounting. Math is about numbers, accounting is about rules, theories, and principles she tells me. You can get gray hair sooner from accounting work than from simple cashier work.
