Subject: RE: 40k is reality in some areas

Southeast Washington
In some places 40k plus overhauls are reality. Having the work done by the dealer just about insures it at the current shop rates. Most threshing wear items never make it to 1000 hours. Our volcanic soils and heavy wheat crops are very abrasive.

A lot has to do with how hard it is pushed through the combine. Not even changing speed but going from the occasional stopping to dump to continuous cutting and unloading on the go really showed more wear running same combines over the same acres in a year.

A JD tech that overhauls combines went independent 4 years ago. This fall he and his crew had 32 JD combines to overhaul this winter that had been going to the dealer and looking for something cheaper than the 40k overhauls. There you go 32 examples in one area of farmers trying to reduce the expensive overhauls. It created a great shop a nice business opportunity. The shop is also 20 miles away from the JD dealership and the combines are coming in from there or further away. One neighbor running 1 Deere long hours said he averages $43,000 on his S690.

Another reality is the same is true of any brand of combine in this area. Doesn't matter the color red, green, silver they all encounter this wear issue. There is no magic color just extended wear and a real chrome shop in the area and changing out more often are the only way to keep the combines going.

I think the ones not having to invest as much in overhauls should consider themselves blessed instead of calling BS on those that do have a large amount invested every year to keep their combine in top condition.

That is why most in the area are setup to tear their combine totally apart on their own to get their combine ready for another year. Just remember not all conditions are the same in this world.

Instead of calling BS on 40k overhauls call yourselves blessed that you don't have that issue yourself. Have a great day.
