| A friend purchased a Camers 20" head this year. He has had nothing but problems with it. 2 gearboxes failed, also has broken several knives. He ended up leasing a used JD 20" head from the local JD dealer. He previously owned a 15" Calmers head & the reason he traded for a Calmers was because he said that was the only way he could get anything for his 15" head. Local dealers didn't want it. Impression I got from talking to him was that the reason he leased the JD head was because the JD dealer didn't want his other head.
Maybe I'm mistaken but doesn't Calmers use the old IH 800 series row units in thier heads? When were the 800 heads built, late '70s? I purchased a new 1440 & 944 head in '82 so it had to be before that. Granted, they are completely gone thru but the metal is still almost 40 yrs old. That was the reason, plus no resale value, is why we went with a new CIH head. I think if I were to buy a different head I would look at a Drago, if they make a 20". We did consider looking at a Geringhof (sp?) but no local dealer & I have been hearing some not so good things about them. Friend has two Gerringhofs, on a 8120 & 7120, & they are very unhappy with them. I have been told that they are wanting to put their old JD heads on their combines. | |
