West Central Wisconsin | I'll give you my 2 cts. based on our 94 Kodiak with 18'-600 bu. tandem. DO NOT buy a CAT 3116. You will not be happy. Automatics are power robbers. Based on our 250 hp engine I would not reccommend any thing under 300 hp. preferably 350. The auto is nice for short hauls but I do not like it for our 80 mile round trip. That might have a lot to do with the lack of horse power. Also you will probably go through brakes more frequently than with a manual. We are in our third season with the Allison auto and have had zero problems with it. When I was looking on-line for an engine last spring at salvage yards they would have transmissions in the $1000-1300 range. I thought they might be more than that. Again just my 2 cts. Joe.
Edited. We have 10K and 44K axles and I have grossed over 54K. I don't think a 12K front would cut it with a 20 foot box.
