Leesburg, Ohio | Not sure about the "cigarette-pack" deal, but it sounds like your reversing switch may be bad. We had to replace one this fall. Ours was mounted in a standard octagon electrical handy box below the rod "plunger" that slides sideways when the auger reaches the ends of it's in-out travel.
The "button" under the stirring auger bearings you speak of sounds like the limit switches that are supposed to shut down the device if one auger quits turning. The button should have a small flapper over it that presses on the button when the flapper it pushed down. The flapper is pushed down by a round disc (about 3 or 4" dia.) on the auger shaft that is held up by three steel balls in a cup bleow the disc on the auger shaft. When the auger is turning, the balls ride up the sides of the cup by centrifugal force, lifting the disc off the flapper. If the auger stops, the steel balls and disc falls, pushing the flapper down, turning off the whole device. On one of ours, the balls and flapper are gone, so when an auger quits, it tends to wad itself up into a pretzel. If the buttons on your's have no effect, they may have been bypassed.
The auger drive belts are tightened only by springs that ride between the motor mount and frame. Ours take AX38 belts (which are really 40" belts). AX37's, which are called for on some Sukup augers, will NOT work! With the right belts, they mount easily and are the proper tension. One inch off on belt size, and they either won't tighten, or they will shred themselves in minutes.
We plan to junk our Sukups at the earliest opportunity. We have already replaced one of three. We have twelve altogether, so have alot of "experience"... :-(
