Subject: RE: 7830 deere tractors

West Central Missouri
Check the ujoints in the driveshaft between the engine and transmission. Ours wore out the rear one, and it went undetected until it broke. The driveshaft became a 2000 rpm flail, and put a crack in the main hydraulic pump casting (effectively ruining it). A neighbor had the same failure on a 7820 a year later. There is an inspection hole in the frame on the right side, behind a plastic door under the exhaust. You can see the shaft through here.

I started checking them for people any time I ran across a large frame 7x20 or 7x30 series Deere. For one guy, I changed the ujoints for him while I was there to install his Ag Leader autosteer. For another guy, I alerted him to the issue and he got John Deere out to deal with it. Both of them were probably saved from an expensive repair. Attached are pictures of the one I changed.

Edit: The first picture is rotated wrong, but I don't care enough to make the effort to change it. This is peeking in through the left side. If you look close, you can see the yokes rubbing due to the slack in the worn cross bearing. That is a catastrophic failure just waiting for a place to happen.
