| Max, sounds like your son had the same problem I did at that age (without the hockey, not enough ice in Iowa!).
You may be on the right track, I went through a growth spurt at the same time I started getting more intense into sports. Screwed up the muscles in my lower back, they would cramp and be sore most of the time. They would be tense to the point of being hard most of the time.
The best relief I found was with anti-inflammatories, and stretching that focused on the low back, hips and legs, and a good chiro. They found that the muscle tension rotated my hips which made the issue worse as it irritated the nerves around the spine in my lower back. As others mentioned, if you have a GOOD chiro in the area, go make friends with him. You may also want to seek out a good physical therapist that is expert in sports injuries.
While recovering, I had to ice immediately after practice, I mean before I showered or changed, immediately! Took out any swelling before it started.
Knock on wood, I've only had back trouble once in 20 years since and it was my fault for doing something stupid.
Let us all know how it turns out for him. Good luck to him.
