Sometimes it's simply an image they have made pop up which looks like it has things you can't click so you initially think it's locked up.
You might actually have something installed though - go to add/remove programs and see if anything was added at a recent date you don't recognise.
Also try malwarebytes free if you don't have it - it can work without upsetting defender.
