S.E. Iowa | We had to adjust spring tension higher after a few thousand acres on our series 2 as we were losing to much corn cause deck plates would stay open. Never messed with cams but our dealer set them tight when new due to the drought that year.
At about 4.8 mph with head at full variable speed i thought it started to push stalks forward so kept it under 5. Our throat on 7230 was all the way back and head was set with very little slope. 17-23 degrees and we may have been flatter. That may have caused it to push stalks at 4.8. As head got older and knife rolls got wore we found we could go faster than new.
New gt this year and we like it better so far. Just a few hundred acres of down corn so far. It came set at 23 degrees and we left it and it handles down corn just as good as series 2 but has end cones.
I dont know yet how to adjust spring tension on gt deck plates but assume its adjustable as well as the quad. I do know the deck plate movement mechanism is much simpler than series 2
Only thing i really disliked on the series 2 was all the throat shelling in dry corn we got and the corn we lost on center 2 rows because of it. Even after we made some modifications.
We are dry and corn was 18.5 to 21. So far quad suspension hasnt needed blown clean. I think that may be more necessary in wet corn, green, and over all wet conditions. Does it work? Not sure may be a sales gimmick. Well do lots if dry corn after beans and will know more.
Many nice features on gt. No auger chain, gear boxes, oil not grease, bonnets may not wear holes at top sprocket due to reshaping, slip clutches are different, deeper trough and larger auger should help with fluff and feeding/shelling at throat. etc.
Your right about deck plates not lasting. Ours blew out (holes) too soon at lower end. Gt is easier to remove them.
We think/hope gt may be the real deal. Time and dry corn will tell.
