At that age, it's tax free in. Then it grows and such and can be, but doesn't have to be, used for education. And it doesn't count against your 'score' for student aid like the 529 does. Then it is tax free out at retirement. I'm not saying 529 isn't a good vehicle, but the flexibility of Roth is pretty attractive.
