Not to sidetrack the thread too far, but you mentioned Jay Leno's electric car. He did a write up on it a while back, a short but interesting article.
Did you know that his 100+ year old car, still is using the original batteries? It runs on special Edison Electric batteries, that are designed to be cleaned and re-used (by the owner of the car) and were designed to last 100 years.
Think about that, over 100 years ago, they designed the batteries to not be thrown away, to not wind up in a landfill.
Of course, back then it was probably a selling point that the batteries would last the life of the owner.
To sidetrack this thread further (sorry) a good lead-acid battery can last almost indefinitely if it's made with thick plates made out of non-recycled lead. My dad had a TD9 crawler that had the original batteries for over 40 years.
Planned obsolescence is hard to prove, but that doesn't mean it doesn't exist. |
