Could you use rubber hose - garden hose but smaller - cut and slit? slide over the wire and wrap with a zip tie? Cheap - time consuming but it looks like a PITA to cut all those welded pieces.
Edit-scratch the idea - would be easier to add a new strand as others have posted.
