First off any mods or improvements are dependant on what crops are you trying to harvest and what issues are you currently experiencing. The S9 series most changes are in the rearrangement of the feederhouse and it being lengthened. Another thing that came along later in the S8 series was the perforated cascade pan. If you aren't harvesting a difficult crop then there probably is little difference in capacity between the 2 series. Hopefully every Gleaner dealer would be knowledgeable with all the changes. Stock the unloading auger will work with a 40 foot header and beyond that you are looking at extending the unloading auger.
