Not to be critical of your machine (paid for is always the best type of iron ;) ) but a V ripper would pull much, much easier. Something to think about if you decide to do much of it.

Generally we rip 18-24" deep. I think the combination of alfalfa and irrigation can make for some hard ground in some of our soils. Some of the best producing alfalfa ground I know of was ripped with a Cat, 3'+ deep.
