I agree, too close. you can't follow general directions if you're in Montana, I'd ask around locally, or find garden site with people in similar climates. If I were to guess, I'd grow them on bare ground in the hottest sunniest place you have, with the vines barely touching. Nice organic soil but no other fertilizer.
