macfarms: is the soil being fractured all the way between your shanks? it is hard to tell from the pics. if you are fracturing only where the shanks are running (and not all the way across to the next shank stripe), you might try narrowing the distance between the shanks. What spacing are those shanks? I added a couple of shanks to my ripper (reducing the distance between them) and it made a big difference. it seems to me that the more shallow you go, the more narrow the gap between the shanks needs to be. I only rip at about 10 inches, and that takes care of our hardpan. I know other around here that go 16+ inches, but I see no need in it when 10 inches is destroying the hardpan. You & I aren't that far apart, and your soil looks a lot like mine (no rocks, praise God)
