Subject: RE: Direct cut pull-type forage harvester??

lake Michigan shore line/Mason county
I have a fox 3000 chopper. I bought a barn kept direct cut head for it this spring. The head looks like a minnie haybine with out crimping reels. I would guess mid sixties age. Used to be lots of them in this area 30 years ago. Popular with dairy farmers once. I also have a flail type Gehl model 72 flail chopper . Flail choppers dont do a very good when it is wet or windy. They also dont throw silage very far back. Most flail type choppers were built for the 90HP tractors and below. I have owned and been around quite a few and most suffered from u joint and gear box failure. If run with a 60-70 HP tractor they seem to hold up much better. These reasons are why I hunted up a chopper with a direct cut head. The driveline was built for the 150 HP range 1000 rpms. They will eat what ever you put though them and will hit the back of any wagon on a windy day with heavy dew on. They are out there, just not easy to find. Al
