nosoup4u - 8/9/2021 13:44 I would go with a spinning reel (open face) not a spincast like a Zebco. Spin casts fill up with crap that the line drags in and are subject to failure. You can get a pretty decent lightweight spinning reel and rod combo at Scheels or other chain sporting good stores for under $40. Also get him a few Marboo jigs which are good for bluegills, crappie and bass.
open face great for adults no way for a kid.
My grandkids use them. But if you enjoy messing around with reels that don't work rather than fishing, that's fine too.
