I have read some informative discussions on the 600 series net balers and I have to say that some of you guys you know more about these balers than anyone at my dealer. My 648 is a 2000 model and has about 10000 bales run through it. I bought it used in about 2003 with approximately 4000 bales on the monitor. At aproximately 9K bales 3 years back, I replaced the gears and bearings on the sledge rollers. Before the next sseason I replaced the belts with a more agressive surface and also changed to John Deere lacings and bought the JD lacer. I have had no problems since. I use Vermeer Net as it gives me no problems. I bale native Blue stem hay that has been cut with an Owatonna/Gehl swather with metal on metal conditioner. I am located in Central OKlahoma NW of OKC.
My problem. I was baling the other day and baled 47 bales with no problem. #48 the kinife would not drop down and cut, it would only bounce. I would stop the PTO and the knife would bounce up and down when restarted. I tried extending and retracting and nothing helped. I cut the wrap with a knife and since I was just starting to reach the red indicator of the wrap, I replaced with a new roll of wrap. The next 2 bales I repeated the same process. At 67yrs old and with a 50yr old spinal cord injury, and bad knees, I was only good for 3 times up and down on that baler.
The only other thing that has been changed on that baler from original is the rubber flap that connects to the knife. The rubber flap came loose from the knife about 3 years ago, and got baled. I replaced it at the time with a couple of Mud flaps and some steel straps to hool over the round bar at the front of the baler. It worked well, as the new flap was stiff enough to stay up and let me look at the wrap as it wrapped the bale. Over the winter, some loose hay and dirt was left on the replacement flap and caused it to have a dip in it. I cleaned all of the stuff off of it but it made no difference on the knife jumping. I found the old flap last year, but it was baling fine and started baling fine this year so I ignored it. I alsoshoul had already baled 50 bales a month before this baling, and had no trouble. I should also mention that whenI checked the left side of the baler, I found the main drive chains were loosing rollers, and had slacked of enough to begin wearing on the big pipe frame of the baler. As I had 60 acres to bale of some very good hay, I went looking for a baler. I ended up with a Vermeer 504R Premium for the paltry sum of $36,500!!! I want my old NH baler back, and am ordering the sprockets and chains, but the knife problem will still be there. I also have watched this operation hundreds of times and I still do not understand how the knife resets when the tailgate is opened. Please help. I want my old baler back. It bales much better than the expensive yellow thing, and the pickup does not leave hay in the field.
My apologies for the long post, but i t is hard to diagnose when someone says "My baler won't work" !!!!!!!
