The fix to this problem was a deeper threaded hole in the end of the crankshaft and a longer cap screw. The longer cap screw along with the deeper hole, holds the end of the crankshaft in compression which greatly increases the strength of the crankshaft snout. The hole in the end of the crankshaft is larger towards the end so the cap screw only threads into the crankshaft deep into the crank. The old style cap screw (R84978) was 1/2"X1-3/4" long and the new cap screw (R85363) is 1/2"X4-7/16". If you are going to put a used crankshaft (or engine) in, be sure to get one that takes the longer bolt or you may be going through this again.
.
edit: It takes a different crankshaft to be able to use the longer cap screw.
