WC MN | frogman We have a very rare situation for many in MN. Here we started the year fully saturated and have had 2-4" of rain since planting started all in small amounts which has allowed plants to grow roots deeper non stop with some cooler weather occasionally to allow roots to keep up. Much of western and southern MN have deep clay soils that hold a lot of water vs Ditts more central MN area that is sandier and has seen tremendous growth in pivots. More typical for here is a wet spring with less root growth and then a dry stretch in July/August where crops suffer. Since this is all glaciated soil almost every section has at least a tiny bit of sand/gravel spots to compare to. A rough rule of thumb is when sand is toast it can be about 4 weeks + before "good dirt" is done, here sand is still alive but on life support. As I said unusual to see weather unfold this way and why so many are underestimating how long we can hang on. Of course a 100 degrees and wind out of the southwest and all bets are off. | |
