You really want to build the OM? Grow alfalfa. Pound per pound alfalfa puts more OM back into the soil than anything out there, baled or not, those roots will go deep and will be around for a long time after you take it out of production. Seed at dehy rates, like 5-6 pounds and acre and that will set you up with a nice stand. We can establish alfalfa pretty easily in NE Sask, but i know of areas in the province that have a harder time due to moisture problems. If alfalfa is not an option, you are going to have to use some more nitrogen, but be prepared for a lesser yield first year out of grass. No matter how much growing season precipitation you get, that grass stubble will always dry out. Alfalfa is a beauty at building OM, but you can still grow a big crop on low OM soils if you get the rain and have the fertilizer there.
