Subject: RE: spring tillage of bean ground?

I'm south of Mankto, MN and my ground is to sticky to get by with no-till. The best is some fall tillage and then one pass with the field cultivator. However, some times we have not not done any fall tillage and just a pass with the field cultivator. That's not ideal for me, but it works.

However, you have to have a really good field cultivator! Back in the day when we had the IH 4300, we didn't get a very good seed bed without fall tillage. We now have a DMI TMII which will do a much much much better job in ground that got no fall till.

We always try to minimize the spring passes because it's impossible to get rid of the tractor tracks in the spring given my soil types. It doesn't matter if they're from a tracked tractor, wheel tractor, or floater -- we can see them all summer until the corn covers them up!

This year might be your time to update your field cultivator.
