Driftless SW Wisconsin | pjt - 6/16/2021 08:42 Because we noticed that the second year, the cows still don't eat that ring of grass around where the pie was the first year. Drag the pasture, manure gets crumbled up, spread out some, and cows aren't leaving rings of grass. Yea, if I had hundreds of acres of pasture, we wouldn't be doing it, for a 40 acre operation, makes a difference. Agreed. Breaking up the cow pies eliminates avoidance zones even the next time rotating through this year as long as you get some rain. Interesting and valid comment: the fewer acres and more intensively we graze, the more valuable little things like dragging and occasionally clipping pastures become. I try to drag or clip after cattle leave a pasture. Aiming for 30 days rest for pasture, they seem to come back stronger. In addition to acres, climate, stocking rates and soils make this a very location dependent topic. |
