Subject: Camper mattress

I've been reminded by my sweet bride that we need to get a better mattress for the trailer before July 4th weekend...she's right, as usual, the ones in there now are horrible. There are 2 bunks but we will never need but one. It's a queen size, but I believe the RV ones are called a "short queen'?
She has done some looking online, & apparently that size, being an "RV part", is pretty pricey...
Are these available from regular mattress stores? One person told her to get a regular queen memory foam & cut it down to fit, then resew the cover...that sounds a little sketchy to me.
What's the NAT take on this? Seems like I remember a thread about it sometime back?

Our first motor home was a used one and the mattress had a lot to be desired. So I bought a memory foam topper from Walmart and just cut it down. We ended up selling that and got a new motor home many years ago and I brought that topper along with me. We have a sleep number bed in there but still have the topper on it too. The topper was easy to cut.

When looking for a used motorhome one fella we talked to got a custom memory foam type mattress from a company in or near Minneapolis. It was pricey but if your back is an issue money/cost should be a secondary concern.

Our local non chain Furniture Store advertises they have them, might want to check a mom-and-pop furniture store where you live if they don't have one they can probably order one.

The Class A mattress is a good option and could fit a regular queen. I heard that a memory-form mattress is good for adequate back support, but it seems costly.

Depends on your rig, you may have options. Our Class A could fit a regular queen, we put a nicer residential queen in it and were happy.

Our current fifth wheel was a short queen. We extended the platform it was on to hold a regular size, as there was room for it with the slide in. We put in a regular sleep number queen with the memory foam toppers, which made it pretty decent.

We put a regular mattress topper on our rv queen short. We had no problem using it and much cheaper than an rv queen short.

If you end up cutting down a memory foam use a marker to make a line to follow and then try using an electric carving knife. They've worked well for any foam I've cut. Good luck with whatever you decide.
