Are current owners of electric vehicles paying road tax since they don’t fuel up in the traditional way? Be interesting how this stuff is all handled. Our neighbor who is general manager at our local electric coop said they want to throw a bunch of money at electric car subsidies so people can buy them but aren’t throwing a dime at the electric grid to insure it can handle it. So what is their proposal for road tax/grid tax of these vehicles for road maintenance or are they so green they don’t hurt the roads? Not against these vehicles at all but seems kinda like when obama care was passed it cost us a 60% more for the same plan in two years time. Might be really expensive for those of us who don’t have use for an electric vehicle at this time for many reasons.

I don't have any confidence at this point in the implementation of a fair tax rate for EVs as compared to fuel taxes paid for road/bridge upgrades and maintenance. But I do think EVs should be paying a road tax in comparable fashion to keep the revenues coming in for the roads. I'm guessing the tax burden to keep the road system funded will mostly come from fuel tax even as EV's become much more plentiful. What better way to push EVs than to have fuel tax pay for the majority share of road system maintenance. But in time if EV's do become the majority, then there will be a taxing method on their electric consumption and/or mileage.

Here's a Jan. 1, 2021 fuel tax table for the USA by state. You can do your own math to see how much you're spending in fuel tax to provide roads/bridges for every vehicle to use, including EV's. For most people, a $100 or $200 cost per year at vehicle registration time that may apply now for EV's would be a huge bargain and certainly come very short (in my opinion) in the funding of our nation's road system upkeep for the EV miles driven.
