Most cantaloupe are ready if they "Slip",this is when the stem detaches from the melon and remains on the vine.If there is a stem on a cantaloupe it will never be the best as it was picked a day or two too early.When it falls off as you touch melon its at peak flavor 95% of the time.Rest of time might be too much water or decay that causes slip.
