Hastings, Florida | I glanced in my wife's closet yesterday, and noticed a PILE of shoes. I counted at least 20 pair, all different colors, styles, and types. I was shocked ! Edited by Jbatmick 4/25/2021 08:54

I don’t remember the number but Imelda Marcos had a ton of shoes. I think I have the name right. Former head of Philippine government years ago

SW OH | I would have guessed my wife has over 50. I just asked her and she said including mud flaps (she calls them flip flops) she thinks she has over 100 pairs. She says she has to have a different pair for every outfit. I watched her count her jeans once. 87 pair. She has a LOT of clothes. I probably have 12 pairs of work boots and 1 pair of tennis shoes. Highland Center, in Southeast Iowa | Jbatmick - 4/25/2021 08:52 I glanced in my wife's closet yesterday, and noticed a PILE of shoes. I counted at least 20 pair, all different colors, styles, and types. I was shocked ! Why does my husband need umpteen dozen tractors? LOL! He can only drive one at a time. But yes, 30-40+ pairs of women's shoes isn't abnormal or odd. I'd go so far as to say that's probably about average, maybe in some circles a little low.

Southeast Colorado | Good answer............LOL. And when it comes to the matching spousal footwear...........it sounds like the wussification of the American male is still rolling along on schedule.

Cambridge, southwestern Nebraska | Never heard of matching shoes for husband and wife. As for women and their shoe inventory. That sounds normal. Got to have shoes to match their outfit they say. Pretty sure my wife has shoes that no longer fit. But I'm not going to bring that up!

Columbia Basin, Ephrata, WA | Probably not that unusual. I don’t have so many now, but when I was in high school I had 20+ different sets of footwear. Sport specific shoes really add up.

NE SD | My wife has MS, so she needs good shoes.......and she only has 4. But I’m not counting 2 pair of sandals or the 2 for “good” for weddings and funerals. Job doesn’t require anything special clothing wise for work, so no need to match, and we don’t go “out on the town” other than to grab a quick meal. So technically 8, but 2 are summer only, and 2 aren’t in regular rotation. Also 1 of the other 4 is just for in the house only.

Mid Michigan | Same reason people in the US have so much of everything. We all make a LOT of money. We get bored and we get lonely so we buy things to fill the void.

My first wife passed away at 58 from ovarian cancer. I never counted the pairs but at least a half a pickup load and just as many purses. I never look in her closet but I'm sure my present wife has that many golf outfits.

Kettle Moraine, WI | Advertisement feeds our consumerisric habits in our attempt to be happy. From wikipedia 'The hedonic treadmill, also known as hedonic adaptation, is the observed tendency of humans to quickly return to a relatively stable level of happiness despite major positive or negative events or life changes.[1] According to this theory, as a person makes more money, expectations and desires rise in tandem, which results in no permanent gain in happiness. Philip Brickman and Donald T. Campbell coined the term in their essay "Hedonic Relativism and Planning the Good Society" (1971).[2] The hedonic treadmill viewpoint suggests that wealth does not increase the level of happiness.[3] Subjective well-being might be largely determined by genetics; that is, happiness may be a heritable trait.[4]"

North Dakota | Couple of years ago I was getting a new pair of work boots. Stopped at the Red Wing store, walked in, told them my name and said I need another pair of boots. Lady asked, same size? Yup. she picked up a box and asked if I wanted to try them on? I said they are the same size as the last 5 pairs so they should fit. I was in and out in less time than it took to type this reply. Wife said she spends more time each morning deciding which pair to wear to work. When she saw how much they cost she said she would never pay that much for shoes, my reply was that she has 10 times that invested in hers. I have a pair of work boots that I wear every day and maybe 5 other pairs. She has 40 to 50. At least 5 pairs of each color in various shades. Our closet has about 10 feet of space for clothes. When we first moved in we divided it in half, my clothes took up about3 feet so she appropriated a bit of mine. When the kids moved away I said I would move my clothes to one of their closets. When her clothes started showing up in mine I took them out and put them back in her 10 feet of closet space. I would have been OK with it if she hadn't pushed my clothes to the back side where I couldn't reach them.

Somerville, Indiana | I am very fortunate, my wife or daughter doesn't spend money needlessly...Have discussed that at supper about others, she mentioned something about some people spend money in order to make themselves feel good...We have relation who do that, however, their boys have bad teeth/go figure..

cavalier county | Last week I dropped my wife off at the mall, ran some errands and then met her for supper. She said she wanted to check on some shoes before we left, ok we go to the store and she's looking at Hey Dudes, I'd heard a couple of women talking about them one day but that's all I knew about them. They're kind of a cheap looking, cloth loafer kind of shoe with a cushy sole and they had a men's shelf too. Even my size so I said 'what the hell' and tried a pair, COMFY!! Moral of the story, we bought matching shoes a few days after our anniversary, and I still feel sorta tough. ; ) But it's kinda embarrassing wearing something so trendy.

sw ontario | Dave so true. I have friends who really struggled and were frugal for many yrs. farming and now have more $$ than they will spend. Watch them buy a boat ,a horse , muscle cars , new corvette, ect. but they soon lose interest in new purchases... Kinda like when you are younger and say 'if I just had xxxx I would be happy for ever'..... Reality for me was hitting 65 , u know you are mortal and working on late fall of your life and its kind of like that Peggy Lee song in 1969 " Is That All There IS " We baby boomers have worked hard but had it best of any generation in History

Ludington/Manistee MI area | I think our 5 year old son has more shoes than either wife or I do. The part about my wife that baffles me is she’ll say she needs new Keens for around the farm my reply is didn’t you just get some yes but they are wore out. I’m like I spend 4-6 times as much time in my Red Wings as your do your Keens and I get easily two years out of a pair. It doesn’t add up if the Keens are so great why do my Red Wings outlast them by so much? She swears by them

Texas | I have no idea how many shoes my wife has nor do I care. She has no idea nor does she care how many guns I have. Shoes are cheaper than guns. I don't care. She is happy, I am happy. I don't try to understand what she likes and she doesn't try to understand what I like. If she wanted to buy piles of dog crap I wouldn't care. She does her thing I do mine. Statistically I am dying before her but if it is the other way the next week we are hauling dump truck loads of crap to the landfill.

NC Kansas | my wife was filling out one of those facebook surveys just to have a little fun, she always adds a little humor to her replies as we find them silly. Anyway, question came up "who spends more money?" and her answer was; He makes quite large purchases and she makes quite frequent purchases... I thought she hit the nail on the head, I don't want to know what she's spent on shoes and she doesn't want to know what I spend on some of my "quite large" purchases. Definitely in the pick your battle zone there!

West central Illinois | 2 years ago I finished building me and wife our shouse. I counted right around 100 pairs of shoes in the closet afterwards, and she still had more in totes that she hadn’t unpacked. I’ll never understand the need or want for so many shoes and clothes. That’s an argument that every man wins in my opinion, but the wife just doesn’t care and won’t change.

Southeast Colorado | If you got her to live in a Shouse...........you're not doing half bad, LOL.
