I understand you want to use what you have
I did not have a smartphone but a friend gave me his old one
It worked but I used my drone so much I bought an Ipad just to fly
The screen was just so much bigger and clearer I never regretted that money
Ebay has many used Ipads pretty reasonably priced
I have also used an Android tablet
