jeeps (the Ford kind that would have the wheels fold under if you went around a corner too fast),

Yes, I remember those Jeeps. Nobody was allowed to drive one until they got their M1-51 endorsement on their military driver's license.

We had a guy in our outfit - name was Thomas Dail. One day a staff sgt. yelled at him to move a jeep out of the way. Dail told him, "I can't. I don't know how to drive."

"It drives just like a car! Now get in there and MOVE IT!"

"I don't know how to drive a car. I never drove one."

"You never drove a car? WHY NOT?"

"Well, I never needed to."

"How you been gettin' around then?"

"A bus or a taxi."

"Where you from, Dail?"

"New York City."

That just about bowled us all over. Dail told us that most people he knew never wanted a car because there'd be no place to put it that wouldn't cost you money. It was cheaper to take a taxi - plus you didn't need to worry about the wheels being gone overnight.
