D panel works the best.

Guy I worked for would nail 2x4s on every 24"-28"; we would follow the shingle lines across the roof to keep them straight.  You could crawl up the purlins like a ladder and we would attach the top of the sheet first and then used a rope ladder attached via a 2-1/2"x2-1/2"x3/16" angle iron to the top purlin; a person standing on rope ladder caused the steel to be pulled tight to the purlins and made it easier to move up and down the sheet to screw it to the purlins.  The rope ladder consisted of double 1/4 steps that clamped on to the older hay mound barn rope with 4 1/4" counter sunk bolts per side, the wooden step did not scratch the steel.

Edit to add:
With the rope ladder we found it was easier to keep everything straight by using 1 piece sheets per side vs trying to splice the sheets since the splice always tends to grow and advance faster than the ends.
