This one has a snap ring. The 540 has a hole drilled in the back that the plunger fits into and the 1000 doesn't so the 1000 pushes the plunger to change speeds I believe.
YES, You got it ! Does that plunger push in with a screwdriver or punch and free to move ? Is the PTO shafts identical except the hole in the end for the plunger ?
If that is all OK, then the shifter on the shift collar might have a problem, like broke, bent or ???
EDIT: Also I think there is a roll pin or two on that fork and shift rail that could fall out ?
