What we call crab apple's, we can eat them. About the size of a silverdollar and are tart yet sweet. (We also have ornamental type apple trees that the apples maybe get in the nickel sized range. Your picture looks like what we have too) You don't eat them, they hang on till spring almost and the birds love them. Some are more tart and very unflattering to the mouth and some are sweetish, but are so small that they aren't worth messing around with to try and make something. How a robin can swallow some of them is beyond me. I don't know the actual technical names of them. Gurney's or some of the other spring seed catalogs should have them in there.
