Have done it.  My washing machine drain daylights about 300 feet from the house and froze up once, a foot of it out of the ground, probably next three feet back close enough to surface to maybe have frozen a little, torpedo at a distance to not soften the pipe and about 10 minutes was flowing water that expedited melting the remainder.
